I often have troubles installing an SMP version of some distros. I get kernel panics after the install, on the first boot. If that does happen, you can just install in uni-processor mode. The biggest issue with Dell, HP whoever is really Hardware RAID, sometimes NIC's and always onboard sensors. If you do not use the hardware RAID and instead go with software RAID you are usually ok.
