I was reading the autoconf manual and it said the opposite: that we could not rely on properties of types when cross-compiling, and in particular it mentioned the size.

Also note that what matters to ECL is not the sizeof() but the number of bits. Assuming that # bits = sizeof() * 8 is definitely wrong.
