It seems like this would be a good idea.
Right now we have one level of protection for a recursive edit.
A (keyboard-escape-quit) will restore the UI to its normal condition.
I think we need one more level of protection.
Specifically if the ECB is not in its default layout (either because of new
buffers or a resize of existing buffers), a keyboard-escape-quit will restore
the original layout. Another keyboard-escape-quit (with the layout setup
correctly) will then deactiveate the ecb.
Thoughts? Any objections?
