#265 resize2fs ext4 and lots of hardlinks ... hanging

Hi,

I've tried to shrink my lvm and therefor had to shrink the ext4 partition before hand by using resize2fs -p /dev/backup-group/backups 400G

The partition is about 1,7 TB in size and ca. 350 GB are used. There are many hard links on that partition (used for rsync/cp -al incremental backups).

The status moves up to here and isn't changing since 2 hours:

root@vhost4:~# resize2fs -P /dev/backup-group/backups
resize2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Geschätzte minimale Grösse des Dateisystems: 70223907
root@vhost4:~# resize2fs -p /dev/backup-group/backups 300G
resize2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Die Grösse des Dateisystems auf /dev/backup-group/backups wird auf 78643200 (4k) Blöcke geändert.

Start von Durchgang 2 (max = 19878848)
Verteile die Blöcke neu XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Start von Durchgang 3 (max = 13957)
Prüfe die Inode-Tabelle XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX------------------

No errors in dmesg and doing the exact same thing on empty partitions or such with 2 or 3 200 GB testfiles works without error.

Kernel Version: 2.6.32.15
Distro: Debian Testing (aka squeeze)
resize2fs version: resize2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
The CPU load of the resize2fs process is 100% (99,7%us 0,03%sy 0,0%id, 0,0%wa)
VIRT/RES memory: 224m/209m

The data on the partition is redundant so the damage is marginal... I'll let it run over night and update the ticket should it resolve.

    This takes way to long?!

    The system runs in 64 bit mode on an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ with 1 GB of RAM and a SAMSUNG HD501LJ and a Seagate ST31500341AS (LVM across 2 disks)

    eventually it did come to an end. but really took a very long time. would appreciate if the performance of resize2fs was improved as the current state for shrinking ext4 is slower than just copying stuff over and creating new lvm/partitons.
