As far as I am concerned, I've experienced both problems. Just to compare, do you play many recordings? As far as I am concerned, I play about 2 hours of recordings every day. Hmmm.... that's a pretty good question. I have no idea where my 1-year-old vdr-dxr3-0.2.9a.tar.gz tarball comes from... If I compare it with vdr-dxr3-0.2.9.tgz from SF, there are a few differences.
