I have dump running from the crontab file in order to
backup portions of my filesystem every midnight. The
crontab entry is:

59 23 * * 1 /sbin/dump -0 -L Lunes -f /dev/st0 /etc
/var/log /home /var/spool/mail /var/spool/postfix

So, last Tuesday I found at my mailbox the log for
monday midnight backup filled up of messages like:

DUMP: bread: lseek fails

Would you mind letting me know what does this message mean?

THanks in advance,

This is a well known issue when using dump on a mounted and
    active filesystem.

    See the bug report at
    http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=204909&group_id=1306&atid=101306
    for more information.

The only permanent 'solution' to this problem is to umount
    your filesystem
before dumping. If you cannot afford the downtime, you can
use filesystem snapshots, as present in LVM or EVMS.

    Stelian.
