No

We are setting up a system which dumps to set of
distributed
machines with lots of IDE discs which we treat as Virtual
Tape Drives. Sucessive runs cycle through the available
servers in turn. Although the majority of the files are
served by
"closed" code (NetApp), we have some Linux systems with
local FS which we dump. To get the dumps to work we have
to shuffle the /etc/dumpdates file to make it appropriate.
Would there be a problem in passing the name of the
dumpdates file as an argument to dump ?
(Would this allow safe simultaneous dumps ?)

I don't really understand why you need this.

Do you do incremental dumps ? If you only do level-0 (full)
dumps you don't need access to /etc/dumpdates.

If I understand corectly you dump local linux filesystems to
the 'Virtual Tape Drives'. Is there one FS per linux host or
more than one (and is this the concurency you are worried
    about ?)

Yes -- we need dumpdates for incremental dumps.

Forget about the concurrency -- a side issue.

FS foo is dumped to VTD1 at L0 on Mon, and L1 on Wed and Fri.
FS foo is dumped to VTD2 at L0 on Thu, and L1 on Sat and Tue.
A separate dumpdates is needed for the VTD1 and VTD2 dumps.

Ok, understood it is not a concurency issue (because dump
puts a lock on the dumpdates file which should provide
safety even if more than one dump process is running and
    accessing the file).

I also understand your problem. A simple solution could be
to compile two instances of dump with a different hardcoded
    dumpdates.

But I agree that the proper solution is to be able to
specify the dumpdates path on the command line. I'll do this
    for the next release.

    Stelian.
