The first thing I'd check would be the configuration in
look for the lines:
If these don't appear in your config file or are set to 0, I could see
this behavior happening - it looks as if the thumbnail code is trying to
scale the images down to width,height of 0,0.

Just to make sure, are you certain those lines are in config/dspace.cfg?
And they're not commented out, say with #'s in front of them? The code
simple, and the only way I can see you getting a scale factor of 0.0 is
values aren't getting set. (Scale factor is simply maxwidth/xsize, so
to get 0.0
then maxwidth needs to be 0.)

I intended to state in my report that I did make sure that I set
thumbnail.maxwidth 80 + thumbnail.maxheight 80. I also tried the object
oriented notation (which I can't quote offhand).
