I've been thinking about this recently, and I'm hoping to try and do
just that (as an experiment, not as something that will necessarily be
incorporated into DSpace). I'm currently working on refactoring the core
object model (again, as an experiment) to use DAOs (I'm documenting my
thoughts here: http://wiki.dspace.org/DaoPrototype), and this should
make it *relatively* simple to stick something like Apache JackRabbit
(http://jackrabbit.apache.org) behind the DAO interfaces to act as the
storage layer for DSpace.
