I found myself in a somewhat similar situation when I was batch importing data to DSpace. I was creating dublin_core.xml files containing values for data.accessioned. I was mistakenly assigning it the value of the date the item was published. DSpace was also picking date accessioned on it's own and I ended up with two date.accessioned fields in each item.
I imagine you'd have to export all items, delete all items from the collection, explicitly set the author field to "none" or something like that and then batch import everything in.

Did the file have a hanging "|" character?  That's what is used to separate multiple entries in the same DC field, and may be giving you the blank.

Barry,

I have tried that. The “blank” dc.contributor.author[en_US] doesn’t get exported in the CSV. Only the CSV which contains text does.

Thanks,

Tom

Try using the metadata export feature on the collection.  You can then edit the .csv file with a program like Excel and use find and replace to get rid of the extra information in the records and then upload the file back to Dspace to make the changes in your instance.

Well I would like to remove it all together, as I already have a dc.contributor.author[en_US] for every item.  Under the discover facet on the XMLUI theme I have the following:

Author

·         unknown (1739)

·         (1627)

Everyone one of the 1,627 I am almost certain is included in the unknown facet’s results of 1739 items.

The metadata for one of the items is like this:

dc.contributor.author

en_US

dc.contributor.author

unknown

en_US

I would want to remove the blank one from the record.

Thanks,

Tom

I take it you would like that if the author name is empty, don't "display" that field in item list and item summary list. Is that right? In that case, the method depends on whether you are using jspui(the default) or xmlui. There are sections in the DSpace user's manual on how to customize displayed metadata, but I'm not sure how you could extend that technique to conditionally exclude metadata fields.

Hi,

I just noticed that I have a lot of items with the following dc.contributor.author[en_US] = “” Where there is no text. And then I have dc.contributor.author[en_US] = “unknown” which I want. Is there is an easy way to remove the empty metadata for the author?

Thanks!

Tom
