Chances are that your motherboard's chipset is the restriction here. Other things are intercompatibility with the video card. For some reason, there are many boards that advertise 4x AGP, but the Matrox G400 is listed as incompatible with the 4x implementation. The FIC KA11 for one, which is one of the boards that I use...
