I observe analogous behavior. The X server hangs during active 3d rendering
with following message in syslog:

Mar  1 18:52:29 fpfe [drm:drm_lock_take] *ERROR* 3 holds heavyweight lock

It appears that only X server is affected (alt-sysrq key combination work).

I use kernel 2.6.19.2, mesa-6.5.2, xf86-video-ati-6.6.3
