System: Red Hat Linux 7.2, Kernel 2.4.16, Asus A7M266, AMD TB 1333/266. 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP. Whenever I opened a game that made use of my 3D accelerator, the settings would begin to load, the video mode would change as if beginning to load the game, and then it would freeze. Mouse could still move, but everything was frozen. Turned out the symbolic links to libGL and libglide were pointing at the wrong modules. Well, I fixed them, and this time when Quake III Arena started up, it got the colors right, but didn't really put them in the right place. The best way to describe it would be if one pictured my monitor split in to six squares (two rows, three columns). In the bottom left hand square there were many little lines and triangles, all of which originated at the bottom left hand corner of the screen and never passed beyond the edge of that square. The background was black; the rest of the screen was also black (i used the square visualization so one could imagine exactly how much of my screen this was happening with). Well, it hadn't frozen; when I moved the mouse, one of the triangles moved as well. And pressing arrows on the keyboard also caused some color changes. But since I couldn't see what I was selecting, it was particularly hard to exit the program (I eventually had to ssh in from another nearby linux box and kill the process). Any ideas as to why it's doing this and how I might fix it? I've got the latest version of XFree (I upgraded it two or three weeks ago), but I don't know what that version is. It's not the CVS, though. Thanks ahead of time for the help! Aciel ac...@sp... Sysadmin, Darkchapter.net |

I wouldn't recommend getting a Voodoo5, since SLI currently isn't supported by DRI. You'd end up getting the performance of a Voodoo4, since only one chip would be used. Therefore, I recommend you get a Voodoo4 (if you want to go tdfx), since you should be able to get it for cheaper, and end up with the same performance. As for the actual best-buy DRI-supported 3d accelerator card, I don't know. -- -Steven In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act. -- George Orwell He's alive. I'd recommend a GF 2 ... you can find one on pricewatch for around a $100 and won't have to worry about all the Glide stuff. For me it hasn't worked in the past. This is my first month with Linux. But I have heard from other people that it does work...or at least the AGP version does. I'm not sure I'd recommend the PCI version anyway. I think this is about the 10th time I've seen this. It is well known that the Glide drivers that come with RH7.2 are broken. You need to go to dri.sourceforge.net and download the latest Glide drivers there. Build and install those, and the Voodoo5 works fine. --Greg |

That worked. I'm one step closer. This next question may be off topic--I simply don't know enough to tell. As soon as I upgraded libglide3.so, glxgears started working perfectly. Unfortunately, Quake3 won't start at all now. Here's the important bit before it closes itself. 4060 files in pk3 files execing default.cfg execing q3config.cfg couldn't exec autoexec.cfg Hunk_Clear: reset the hunk ok Joystick is nto active. ----- Client Initialization ----- ----- Initializing Renderer ---- ------------------------------- ----- Client Initialization Copmlete ----- ----- R_Init ----- ...loading libGL.so: QGL_Init: Can't load libGL.so from /etc/ld.so.conf or current dir: /usr/local/games/quake3/libGL.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory failed ...loading libMesaVoodooGL.so: QGL_Init: Can't load libMesaVoodooGL.so from /etc/ld.so.conf or current dir: /usr/local/games/quake3/libMesaVoodooGL.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory failed ----- CL_Shutdown ----- RE_Shutdown( 1 ) ----------------------- ----- CL_Shutdown ----- Sys_Error: GLimp_Init() - could not load OpenGL subsystem My first action was to search my hard drive for libMesaVoodooGL. Well, turns out I only had Mesa 3.4, and the only libs I had were libOSMesa.so.3.3, libOSMesa.so.3, and libOSMesa.so. So I went to mesa3d.org and downloaded 4.0, ran ./configure, make, make install. No errors. Oddly enough, I still don't seem to have 4.0 installed. Can't find the files anywhere. I also tried linking libGL.so to libGL.so.1 in /usr/lib. That accomplished nothing, except removed the error about libGL.so. Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong? Thanks again for the help! Aciel ac...@sp... On my system that's in /usr/lib/libGL.so --Greg |

Once again, you've brought me a step closer. Quake3-based games load fine now, though they're extremely slow (syncing every frame helps but even then it's far slower than it should be on a V5). Also, they won't occupy the full screen unless i tell them to use 1600x1200 resolution, and I'm sure that's slowing it a bit. I was wondering if the Verto was Linux supported. 3dfx.com mentions a deal where you can trade in old Voodoos and get a Verto. I'm thinking of doing that and getting the GeForce 3 Verto Ti500. Any words of wisdom? Thanks again! Aciel ac...@sp... I have 2 resolutions set up in my config. 1280x1024 and 640x480. Before I play I switch to the lower resolution and it plays fine that way (RTCW). I have some texture smearing issues, but I think it's a Glide problem. Every time I update it and recompile, it gets better. *shrug* I'd save the Voodoo for an older system and get a regular GeForce3. The difference between the GF3 and GF3 Ti is hardly noticable, at least in Windoze, and you'll save $50 -$75. Shop around. Pricewatch rules. BTW, they only give you $10 - $30 toward the purchase price, and last I checked, the Ti500 is close to $400. in stores, $300 online. I'll keep my old Voodoo.
