First of all, my system is as follows:
Asus cur-dls mb (serverworks chipset)
dual 1 GHZ PIII's
radeon 9000 128mb pci
dual mylex raid controllers
I have been working on this problem for a couple of months now. I initially set my system up with an 32MB ATI Rage pci video card I had laying around. This worked fine, but I later decided that I wanted better graphics performance so I installed a 128mb radeon 9000 pci (my mb does not have agp) video card. With the new card the system would hang after a few minutes. I started watching top and the system would use up all memory, then wait time would go up to 98% on both processors and everything would just stop. I assumed this was something to do with drivers so I began tinkering with dri. After alot of searching and hair pulling I was finally able to get dri working. glxgears runs @ 990fps. It appeared that my problems were solved, but a few hours later my system hung up again. Now when it happens, memory does not appear to be used up, but wait time goes up to 98% on both processors just as before, and every once in a while (well twice now) I loose the screen all together (black screen, flashing amber light on monitor). The problem appears to be somehow related to X as it always seems to happen when I am opening a window or something (screensaver starting etc..). What makes things even more confusing, is that sometimes it will run for a day or two, then all of a sudden it hangs. I have not been able to find any one or combination of events that causes this to happen, and now I am just stumped. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I did not configure with agpgart as I do not use agp. Does this matter?

Check Your /var/log/XFree86.0.log for anything interesting. If that doesn't
help check /var/log/syslog (or /var/log/messages) for any messages from
radeon or dri. If you find anything about 'heavyweight' update DRI to most
recent version from CVS.
(BTW. if that hang occurs with OpenGL apps the solution above is almost sure)
