I don't think it's worth upgrading for the mach64 driver at the moment.
AFAIK there have been no major changes to the mach64 driver since Xorg

What do you mean with "unmerge"? Anyway, to get the latest drivers you
need to run modular Xorg. If you don't have it in your distribution yet,
you will need to build and install it from scratch. But I believe Gentoo
has adopted the modular Xorg already. Then you can compile an updated
xf86-video-ati in order to get the latest DDX drivers, Mesa CVS for the
latest 3D driver and DRM CVS for the latest kernel DRM driver. See
