A lot of lock-ups and screen corruptions which people observe
with Xfree86 with DRI enabled are due to the fact that people
doesn't know that DRI requires more than 4 times the memory
necessary for regular 2D rendering. This what hapens to me at
1280x1024x24bpp on 16 Mb Rage 128 PF. It looks sane, but it isn't
with DRI enabled.
Could someone add sanity check of available memory
before enabling DRI at a certain resolution?
32 Mb card people probably don't care, but there is abandance of
good 16 Mb cards.
I really don't know which part should have this check - x86cfg, or X,
or dri drivers.
