Using gnome the font properties allows you to adjust the model for the flatpanel.  RGB or BGR either horizontal or vertical.  Don't know the KDE equivalent.

One of those four should minimise the coloured fringing.

Sweet! That was it. Thanks. :) Text looks much better now without
those multi-color artifacts. All I had to run was:

dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig

and shut off subpixel rendering from there. It was also informative
for me to read /usr/share/doc/fontconfig/README.Debian
