I've just downloaded i810-20020628-linux.386.tar.bz2
run install.sh all was going well until it tried to
compile and failed. I downloaded the earliest version I
could find, which was 20020621 which died on the same
error.

I'm running Gentoo Linux, using their custom kernel
which I believe is a version of 2.4.19-pre??? with a
few extra patches.
Hardware is Sony Vaio PCG-FX209k

Are you still having this problem with more recent snapshots?

This has been open too long. Closing for sake of tidyness. I
    don't recall the outcome.
