Yep, I finally got myself a better card. Why a Voodoo
4? My dad had it laying around. Anyway, I'm quite
impressed at the new-found effeciency of the revamped
TDFX driver, although it (still) does not like a
banshee. However, the system still has its bugs, and
although I'm a console freak as far as UT is concerned
and this bug doesn't bother ME, you should still know
about it. In (the native Linux version of) Unreal
Tournament, the background menu texture gets
increasingly corrupted, and it quickly gets to a point
where the menus are unusable. If you run into this
problem, you can exit UT by typing "exit" at a console
prompt (press <TAB> for "quick console" access, it
appears by the chat menu). This is on a Voodoo 4, the
V5 may act differently.

See the screenshot to see what I am talking about. As
usual, the system doesn't realize that anything's
wrong, so I have no logs to show.

Hmm... if UT is your main 3D game, I'd recommend upgrading
to the mesa-3-5-branch of the DRI CVS source. Mesa 3.5
fixes several such problems I have seen (including the
corrupted textures in the intro sequence and Deck16][).

However, it does tend to break other games, such as Tribes2
(which you shouldn't be playing on a Voodoo ;), BZFlag,
Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and a couple others. Hope
    this helps. :)

I would love to use Mesa 3.5, but I can't find GLUT. If you
don't know, GLUT is a library needed to compile Mesa, and
evidently the version distributed with Slackware is
insufficient. If YOU know where to find GLUT, PLEASE tell.

The Resources page on the DRI website has links to all the
required GLUT stuff. Happy gaming! :)

No, my friend. I need much more than the include file and
the library. Mesa configure demands the SOURCE!

Never mind. I managed to compile Mesa 3.4.2, but it broke my
driver completely. I'm now stuck without even software
    rendering.

I reverted to the Mesa 3.2 provided with Slackware (what I
was using in the first place), and it worked. Another thing:
when I try to access the DRI CVS, the commandline CVS client
returns a "host lookup" failure, which tells me the CVS
either no longer exists, or has been moved and the CVS tab
    hasn't been updated.

Whatever, I wasn't complaining about the problem, just
pointing it out. I'll go play UT now.
