It was pointed out by Clarence that the
"debug" variable is reserved in "configure"
script and should not be used in configure.ac.
I had a brief look and it seems our configure.ac
is not very good.
The attached patch intended to resolve some
issuses of that kind. It also removes an obsolete
"dodebug" - what is to stay compatible with?
I am not very familiar with all that autoconf
stuff, so the patch is more an RFC.
Btw, autoscan complains a lot. Someone may
have to look at that as well.

This patch works well. Now the 2 (often conflicting) debug options are gone
and things like --disable-use-svgalib work again. Thanks :)

Ditto here. The attached patch (dare I call it "configure2.diff"? :)) should
be applied on top of yours. It:
* tries to remove all remaining traces of "dodebug"
* changes --enable-use-<feature> to --enable-<feature>,
which like the dodebug -> debug change, makes DOSEMU act more
like other packages, which is a good thing, IMHO
* I think AC_CHECK_LIB sets the right variable now when it fails

Yeah, that's ugly:
[dosemu@... 1156-ac]# autoscan 2>&1 | wc -l
And while we're at it: why do we have --enable-no<feature> options?
Shouldn't there just be --enable-<feature> options and --disable-<feature>
would do the same as the current --enable-no<feature>?
