If a joystick is plugged into a Windows system (I was using Vista; no clue about other OSs) and joysticks are enabled in the .conf file used, and mapper.txt is missing, then DOSBox crashes after displaying the detected joystick's axes/buttons in the Status Window.

All three conditions must be present or there is no crash.

An expected behavior would be for DOSBox to either use hard coded settings, to generate a mapper.txt based on such settings, or to display an error to the user indicating mapper.txt is required for joystick support (and then to disable the joystick for the session).

    Thanks for reporting.
Does it happen with joysticktype=auto as well?

Yes. I tried auto, 4axis, and 2axis and they all crash.

Also it might be a bug with SDL (is it SDL which handes mapper.txt, or is it DOSBox? The answer is probably the program that is responsible for the crash). I made sure DOSBox was using the latest stable SDL (1.2, built 7/20/07) and it still crashes.

No, it's not related to SDL.
The only workaround is to use joystick=none
    or to attach two joysticks.
