Both Gecko and WebKit have the potential to be taken over by some corporation, given enough money and pressure. Trolltech can suddenly stop Open Source support for Qt. I don't know how valid any of these concerns are. So I guess we need to select an engine that is least likely to be influenced by Google. Gecko is currently developed by Mozilla, which is substantially funded by Google until 2011 (or beyond). Chrome uses WebKit. Twisted. Develop our own? Unlikely. What kind of application are people interested in? Tabs? Processes? Threads? What exactly don't you like about Firefox? It's customizable and functional. It has a large user base. It's been tried and tested. I don't think we should restrict users from using Google, or any other search engine, if they wish to. We can have YaCy as the default search engine. I think it has potential, but it lacks the prowess of commercial search engines. Also, it's kind of broken if people's machines are off.
