I've spent today boning up on HTML5. After some quick searching, I guessed
that there's no current implementation of a docutils HTML5 writer. I think
one is really quite desirable, mostly because new semantic tags remove the
need for a lot of the custom classes that the html4 writer has to use to
represent the doctree.
As of now (just before I go to bed), I'm about 50% through writing one
(excluding rigorous tests). It's at <
http://github.com/eegg/docutils-html5-writer>. Just notifying you lot,
really, with two small questions:
- has anyone done this already/is someone doing it?
- does anyone have any particular thoughts on how this should be

Not to my knowledge. However, you might be interested in a view on the
html4_strict writer in the sandbox.

The html4_strict writer inherits from the standard html4css1 writer and
overwrites some methods. This way it is easier to keep the two in sync.
Your mileage might vary.
