config: debian 3.0 (stable); python 2.1.3; docutils 0.3.1
I installed the docutils-snapshot on 10 April 2004 (so I'm assuning
it's 0.3.1, couldn't find a version string) and tried to run it on a
couple-thousand line text document.
I hoped this would work as the support pages say "2.1 should work as
long as the compiler is installed" (which in my case it is).
I almost got there, but hit a showstopper; there seems to be a bug
or incompatibility in html4css1.py. Two tracebacks are attached; the
first for my document and the second for docutils/test.txt.
This seems like it should be possible to fix fairly simply, though
I can see you would prefer not to hack things to support 2.1.x anymore.
Are there workarounds, or is docutils offically no longer working
with python2.1? I am new to python and am unlikely to be able to program
around this. I had a trawl through the list archives and found nothing on
I'm really looking forward to using this more, any help would be

Use the -V/--version option on rst2html.py.

The problem was calling unicode() on integer values, which doesn't
work in 2.1. I've checked in a workaround. For the time being,
we're still maintaining 2.1 compatibility for Docutils (except for
docutils.readers.python, which isn't fully usable yet anyway).
Zope 2 still runs on Python 2.1 IIRC.
Please give it a try now: http://docutils.sf.net/docutils-snapshot.tgz
Thanks for the bug report!

The latest release (2.7, aka "the one that has a docutils snapshot in
it") recommends 2.3.3, but that's still pretty recent.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: one way is to
make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies and the
other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious
deficiencies. -- C. A. R. Hoare
