The HTML formatter uses   in various places. However, this entity is undefined for XHTML. As there is no XHTML formatter, it would be nice if the existing HTML formatter would emit code that is at the same time valid HTML (4) as well as XHTML.

Thanks,

Changed "Tracker" from Bug to Feature Request:

Testing the reStructuredText Test Document, the w3.org HTML validator
    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://docutils.sourceforge.net/test/functional/expected/standalone_rst_html4css1.html
    resulted in

This document was successfully checked as XHTML 1.0 Transitional!

So, using   is not a bug. (Hint: the document references a DTD.)

OTOH, it might be an idea to get rid of the need for an external reference by using either the
unicode char (in UTF-8 encoding) or a numerical entity specification.
Pro and con of such a change should be discusses at the mailing list.
