Category: XSL Group: output: manpages >Status: Pending >Resolution: Fixed Priority: 3 Submitted By: Michael(tm) Smith (xmldoc) Assigned to: Michael(tm) Smith (xmldoc) Summary: man: Support Footnote Initial Comment: We need to handle Footnote. Currently, numbered footnote markers are generated correctly (using code automatically imported from the HTML stylesheets), but the footnote contents are not collected and displayed. I propose to handle it by adding support for generating a FOOTNOTES section at the end of the man page, before or after the REFERENCES (links) section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Michael(tm) Smith (xmldoc) Date: 2006-09-21 18:55 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=118135 Revision 6310. Added initial support in manpages output for footnote, annotation, and alt instances. Basically, they all now get handled the same way ulink instances are. They are treated as a class as "note sources": A numbered marker is generated at the place in the main text flow where they occur, then their contents are displayed in an endnotes section at the end of the man page (currently titled REFERENCES, for English output, but will be changed to NOTES). This support is not yet complete. It works for most "normal" cases, but probably mishandles a good number of cases. More testing will be needed to expose the problems. It may well also introduce some bugs and regressions in other areas, including basic paragraph handling, handling of "mixed block" content, handling of other indented content, and handling of authorblurb and personblurb in the AUTHORS section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Michael(tm) Smith (xmldoc) Date: 2006-09-21 18:55 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=118135 A change for this issue has been added to the current codebase. Please test the change with the latest snapshot from: http://docbook.sourceforge.net/snapshots/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Michael(tm) Smith (xmldoc) Date: 2006-04-13 19:35 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=118135 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Michael(tm) Smith (xmldoc) Date: 2005-09-21 16:39 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=118135 Actually, there is a precedent for listing and numbering ulinks together with footnotes: The XSL-FO stylesheets have the ulink.footnotes param - http://docbook.sourceforge.net/snapshots/xsl/doc/fo/ulink.footnotes.html So I suppose having ulinks and footnotes listed together at the end of the page in manpages output is the way to go. And I guess in that case, the default section name should probably be NOTES. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Sam Steingold (sds) Date: 2005-07-18 22:56 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=5735 why is it important for footnotes to be numbered the same way in html and pdf/man (I would expect the links and footnotes to be handled identically in man and pdf)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Michael(tm) Smith (xmldoc) Date: 2005-07-18 13:42 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=118135 It has been suggested that footnotes and links should be numbered and listed together in a single REFERENCES (or NOTES) list. However, the problem with that is it would mean that footnotes in man-page output would be numbered differently than they are in HTML and PDF output. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=373750&aid=1240032&group_id=21935 |
