It would be nice if the abstract.notitle.enabled variable was also avialable for the PDF output.

Here is the modification used in our system for this.

<!-- Customization to make the abstract.notitle variable work for the PDF -->
<xsl:template match="abstract" mode="titlepage.mode">
<fo:block>
<xsl:if test="$abstract.notitle.enabled = 0">
<xsl:call-template name="formal.object.heading">
<xsl:with-param name="title">
<xsl:apply-templates select="." mode="title.markup"/>
</xsl:with-param>
</xsl:call-template>
</xsl:if>
<xsl:apply-templates mode="titlepage.mode"/>
</fo:block>
</xsl:template>
