the current (playback) controls collide with non-english (e.g. in my case german) keyboard layouts

in germany, the []> keys are 2nd or 3rd level key-combinations - f.e.
[ equals ctrl+alt+8 or AltGr 8
] is ctrl+alt+9 or AltGr 9
and > is shift+<

they are currently not usable for german users (and possibly also for others)

I'd appreciate if it was possible to either customize the shortcuts or if you could change the playback controls to something more standardized like jkl-style (in case you don't know - most editing programs have their playback on j;k;l keys
with j being backwards,
k being pause and
l being forward play)

cheers and thanks for the great tool,

mike

ps: avi support would be a big +, too

    Changing playback to j/k/l sounds fine if that's what other programs are using; are there other standardized shortcuts, like for frame next/previous?

    > ps: avi support would be a big +, too

    The QuickTime plugin for Windows will playback some AVI files; try opening them and see if it works.

    Thanks, Darby

    I'll check back with our company's editing-system keyboard layouts tomorrow.

    As for playing AVI through QuickTime: didn't even work for uncompressed AVI files.

    Great suggestions, thanks. I made a couple modifications to the ones you marked "maybe", see what you think:

    * Window Close - Ctrl + E

    * Window Fullscreen - U

    Seems more intuitive to me than Alt + Return, but if that's the standard for other software I'll change it.

    * View Center - Delete
    * View Reset - Insert

    This groups all the view keys together on a US 101-key keyboard.

    I've also added the ability to customize the shortcuts; hopefully I'll release a new version next week with the changes.

    For AVI playback, can you send me information about exactly which version you are using and on what operating system? Also, can you play QuickTime movies with the version you are using?

    Thanks, Darby

    Hi Darby,

    * Window Close - Ctrl + E
    * Window Fullscreen - U

    both seem fine to me - alt+return is more or less typical for windows media player and some games, but i guess its not that common on other platforms

    * View Center - Delete
    * View Reset - Insert
    I would swap those two, otherwise i think its a good idea to group the view keys (i guess you are refering to the number block on the right of the keyboard?)
    the Delete key for reseting zoom seems more obvious to me - that's why the swap

    customization ability is more than i had hoped for ;)

    i'll check avi playback, might be i didnt download the quicktime-version of the binaries

    I've just released a new version, 0.7.2, that has most of these suggestions, plus the shortcuts are customizable now through the preferences.

    If you get a chance, test it out, and I can close this ticket...

    Thanks, Darby

    PS. Any luck with the AVI files?

    So far, this release is great!
    Shuttle via right mouse button and move via middle button works really well for me. - you even switch to the right cursors...
    I'm more than happy with the default shortcuts (except maybe = for zooming in but thanks to customization i could easily change that)

    Some minor questions that should probably go to their own feature requests or have nothing to do with the request itelf - this one can clearly be closed as far as I'm concerned.

    How do I get to choose which format I save an image/video in? - maybe a file chooser dialog would make sense here
    Where do you save the changes to the preferences/keyboard shortcuts? - in some cases it might be useful to distribute these to multiple computers to avoid having to do it again on each machine. I couldnt find any config files at first sight.
    Uncompressed AVI infact did work, havent had time to test out any codec that is aviallable for quicktime and avi (like the blackmagic ones)

    Many thanks and greetings

    Mike

    Eventually I'd like to be able to have multiple shortcuts, so both =/+ could be used for zoom, but the toolkit I'm using doesn't seem to support that yet.

    One additional thing about the shortcuts, another user mentioned that they thought the arrow keys for moving the view were redundant now that it's easier to use the mouse, and that they could be re-mapped like:

    Left, Right - Frame Previous, Next
    Up, Down - Speed Control

    I'm not sure I mind either way; what do you think?

    If you don't mind; we could also continue discussions on the mailing list.

    > How do I get to choose which format I save an image/video in? - maybe a

    It's all done by file extension right now; but you're right, it's probably best to have some sort of menu so you can at least see what options are available.

    > Where do you save the changes to the preferences/keyboard shortcuts?

    If you're using UNIX, they are located in your home directory:

    $HOME/.fltk/djv-0.7.2

    On Windows:

    $HOME/Application Data/djv-0.7.2

    There's a pref file for each application, and one for global preferences.

    Good news; if you need a specific codec let me know, right now I just have these hard-wired on the Windows version: Raw, JPEG, MJPEG-A, MJPEG-B, H263, H264, DVC-NTSC, DVC-PAL.

    Thanks, Darby
