Folks, Version 0.97 of the DIET Agents software has just been released. It is available for download from SourceForge.net at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D85876&package_id=3D= 8 9045&release_id=3D312656 Version 0.97 includes relatively small changes, but ones that developers should find useful. In fact, most changes have been made in response to comments by a developer. In the core layer, two new interfaces have been added: AgentCreator and AddressParser. Both interfaces make capabilities that are provided by the core more re-usable. In the ARC layer, a MirrorFactory interface and BasicMirrorFactory implementation have been added. These provide a convenient way for agents to initiate remote communication, as they do not have to set-up and create the Mirror agents directly. The "mirrorchat" and "running" sample application have both been updated to use this new functionality. For more details about the DIET Agents software, please visit the DIET Agents webpage at http://diet-agents.sourceforge.net. Cheers, Erwin |

Folks, Version 0.96 of the DIET Agents software has just been released. It is available for download from SourceForge.net at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D85876&package_id=3D= 8 9045&release_id=3D292118. Version 0.96 includes many improvements to the ARC layer, a new sample application, and full separation of the visualisation models in the core layer. Most changes have taken place in the ARC layer. Jobs have been updated to properly obey the required startup and shutdown contract. In particular, on closedown each job now makes sure that any event managers it added are removed again, and also that all schedule events it scheduled are disabled. For jobs that use multiple schedule events, the new SubScheduler can be used to easily disable all these events at once. Similary, the EventManagerContainer can be used to remove multiple event managers in one go. The SerialJobManager has been made more general by supporting different execution modes: reset on start-up, loop on completion and single job execution. This new functionality is demonstrated in the new "job" sample application, which also demonstrates newly added jobs such as RepeatJob, RepeatLimiterJob, DelegatingDelayJob and TerminatingDelayJob. Many classes now also output useful debugging information in their toString method, using the newly BasicToStringFormatter utility class. Also, a few bugs that could occur in "high load" conditions have been fixed in MessageChannelProviderJob, MessageChannelEventManager and MasterMirrorJob. In the core layer one significant change has taken place. The visualisation models have been completely seperated from their underlying implementations, and accordingly exist in a package of their own. This makes it easier to develop fancy visualisation functionality, but also makes writing simple listeners easier as the use of cookies for access protection has nearly completely disappeared. As these changes affect existing visualisation components, a new version of the Elvis visualiser has been released that is compatible with this latest release of the platform. So it is recommended that you also download Elvis Version 1.02 after having downloaded the latest version of the platform. Just so that you are aware, in order to get this release out of the door before Christmas, the platform hasn't been tested quite as extensively as I would have liked. All appears to work fine, but I cannot quite guarantee that the reworked ARC components are absolutely flawless.=20 For more details about the DIET Agents software, please visit the DIET Agents webpage at http://diet-agents.sourceforge.net. Folks, Version 0.95 of the DIET Agents software has just been released. It is available for download from SourceForge.net at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D85876&package_id=3D= 8 9045&release_id=3D279471. Version 0.95 provides support for agent persistence, support for SSL sockets, support for controlling groups of agents, several minor bug fixes and other improvements. In the core layer, changes were made that enable serialisation of agents while they are running. Together with the newly added ability to pause agents by locking them, this provides basic support for agent persistence. In the ARC layer, a package was added that supports visiting of agents which enables convenient external control of a group of agents. This can for instance be used in order to save agents to file, as demonstrated by the new "persistent sorting" demo application. The kernel now provides the ability to use thread queuing, enabling agents to accept events even when there are temporarily no threads available (but this feature should be used with care!). Various minor bugs were fixed in the remote communication functionality provided by the ARC layer. See the release notes for details and other improvements. For more details about the DIET Agents software, please visit the DIET Agents webpage at http://diet-agents.sourceforge.net. Cheers, Erwin |

Folks, Version 0.94 of the DIET Agents software has just been released. It is available for download from SourceForge.net at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D85876&package_id=3D= 8 9045&release_id=3D249510. Version 0.94 includes much improved support for remote communication support, various new sample application that demonstrate this new functionality, and many other improvements and several minor bug fixes. In the ARC layer, there is now a robust and efficient implementation of "Mirror" agents, which provide transparant remote communication. Furthermore, "message channels" have been added as another way of remote communication. A newly added chat sample application demonstrates how to use both remote communication schemes and what the differences are. The new "running" sample application demonstrates how to use mirrors as well. In the core layer, the use of sockets has been generalised, and I/O errors can now be observed using the newly added SocketErrorListener interface. The release includes many other improvements and several bug fixes. See the release notes for details. Folks, Version 0.93 of the DIET Agents software has just been released. It is available for download from SourceForge.net at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D85876&package_id=3D= 8 9045&release_id=3D208466. In the core layer, there are now "Model" interfaces for agents, connections, environments and worlds. These can be used by visualisation tools. These model interfaces are for instance useful for filtering events when for efficiency you only want to view part of a running system. In the ARC layer, the InterdependentJobManager has been added, which can be used to let dependent jobs finish at the same time. Other improvements and bug fixes have been made as well. See the release notes for details. For more details about the DIET Agents software, please visit the DIET Agents webpage at http://diet-agents.sourceforge.net. Cheers, Erwin |

Folks, Version 1.00 of the Elvis visualiser has just been released. It is available for download from SourceForge.net at <http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=85876> http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=85876 Version 1.00 is the first public release of Elvis, an elementary visualiser for the DIET Agents platform. It is released under the GNU GPL license. Although the visualiser has been developed fairly rapidly, it is surprisingly useful. We very much recommend you download the first release of Elvis together with the latest version of the platform. You can then use Elvis to visualise each of the sample applications that are included with the platform. This should help you to understand the applications better but is also visually appealing. Furthermore, you can also use Elvis to debug and visualise your own DIET applications. For more details about the Elvis visualiser and the DIET Agents software, please visit the DIET Agents webpage at <http://diet-agents.sourceforge.net> http://diet-agents.sourceforge.net Cheers, Erwin |

Folks, Version 0.92 of the DIET Agents software has just been released. It is available for download from SourceForge.net at <http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=85876> http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=85876 Version 0.92 of the DIET Agents software is not very different from the previous release, Version 0.91. Most significantly, it includes the WorldFactory which provides a hook for attaching monitoring and visualisation tools. This functionality is used by the Elvis visualiser, which has also been released today. Elvis is an elementary, generic visualiser for the DIET Agents platform. We very much recommend you download both the latest version of the platform and the Elvis visualiser. You can then use Elvis to visualise each of the sample applications that are included with the platform. This should help you to understand the applications better but can also be quite visually appealing. Folks, Version 0.91 of the DIET Agents software has just been released. It is available for download from SourceForge.net at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=85876 Version 0.91 is the second release of the DIET Agents software. The most significant difference with the previous release is that many of the classes and methods have been renamed. More specifically, any mention of "infohabitant" has been replaced by "agent", which is not only more concise but also more meaningful. Of course, it does mean that any code that used Version 0.90 does need to be updated before it is compatible with Version 0.91. Fortunately, we've provided conversion scripts that do most (if not all) of the work that's needed. Other changes include minor improvements in the core and ARC layer, and a few new components have been added, e.g. ConnectionSharingJobManager. More details can be found in the CHANGES.txt file that's included in the release files. For more details about the DIET Agents software, please visit the DIET Agents webpage at http://diet-agents.sourceforge.net Cheers, Erwin |
