Here we go once more: Hmmm, again, this sounds like the ISA PNP options in the 1.0.1 kernel are turned off in the config. And there was me thinking it only happened with the 1.1.1 SMP beta I tried out (see that thread, subject: "devil-linux-1.1.1-2003-11-04-i586-SMP-bs", for more info). To give a more specific answer: your likely somewhat older machine's floppy controller is probably hooked up to an PNP ISA based IO controller (in the south bridge on the mainboard or on a separate ISA connected chip) and since the 1.0.1 kernel doesn't initialise ISA devices, it can't find the floppy because its IRQ is wrong.
