same problem here, and no idea about how to solve it... also i don't have
the correct char mapping, so iptraf doesn't show well..

i use mc to change scripts.
all works fine while i am on the local console.
if i try to use putty the function keys does not work.
any ideas how to fix this ?

2 ways do do it:
instead of pressing F4, you can press ALT + 4
change in putty under Terminal / Keyboard / "The Function keys and key=
