Based on the urging of the http://www.devil-linux.org front page :-), I downloaded
the Devil-Linux 06Beta1 dated 6/18 to give it a try. I didn't get very far.
While unpacking the OS, (?reading /cdrom/boot/ramdisk.tar.bz2?), it
complained that it ran out of memory. Needless to say, this starting
producing various other errors later on in the boot process (file not found,
unable to link directories, etc.)
The system I am using is a Pentium II based system with 64MB of memory.
Devil-Linux V0.5 leaves about 24MB free. Devil-Linux V0.6Beta left about
A few other details that I noticed (for the short time that I left it up and
o You are using a different source for your "ps" command. Under V0.5, the
[old style] command 'ps -agx' runs without error. Under V0.6Beta1, it
o A 'ps agx' command (I learn fast :-) ) produces some "unusual" processes -
all of which start with "jfs". Now, I presume this is for the IBM jfs file
system - which I am not using. So, why is it started, and how do I disable
it? (I couldn't find anything in config, software, or in init.d).
o When it went to unpack the floppy, it first checked for ext3, then ext2,
then it mounted the floppy. Has the rules changed and are we supposed to
use ext3/ext2 formatted floppies? [I am using FAT formatted floppies.]
o The startup seems to take a lot longer.
o I noticed (when I ran /sbin/dmesg), that it complained that it couldn't
load some scsi modules. Not much of a problem for me per se as I don't have
o I noticed (when I ran /sbin/dmesg), that it complained about trying to
setup 3 different types of Raid (Highpoint, Promise, and something else.)
Would I be correct that if I wish to continue to use Devil-Linux, I will now
be forced into creating an ISO from scratch so that I can get it to fit into
my memory (since the included ISO's ramdisk.tar.bz2 doesn't seem to fit)?
(Oh, one more thing: It would be really helpful if in the docs directory
you had something that matched up packages with their normal homepages. It
"great" that the software list (and config and sysconfig/software) says you
have "DDT", but it would sure be helpful if you gave me its homepage so I
could determine if I wanted the d&mn thing!)
