Tim and Heiko, thank you very much for your input, unforunately I was busy
doing other things so I could not work on this issue for a while, and the
freemail provider locked my email address due to incorrect data.
The image I used was from devil-linux-1.0.6-i486 bootcd.iso (unmodified).
I did flash the bios to the newest version (this does not rule out it
beeing broken still, of course). But this did not change anything. I tired
another firewall-on-cd-linux (sentry linux), which does produce another
error (Loading spec packet failed, tried to wing it). Well, not very

which contains the discussion I refered to, but I was very sloppy in
formulating this, as I do not really understand. I think the issue is as
summed up by Tim (the processor claims to be fully 684 compliant, but it is
not), this seems to make sense to me, but, as I said before, my
understandig of such things is very low.
