Looks to be for setting up a dial-in server. Might be useful if I'm away from the office, but not quite what I'm after. British Telecom is dragging their feet about putting in broadband (6 month delay so far) so I've got to use the modem as the connection to my ISP until such time as broadband gets fitted, and I can use DL as a firewall for my broadband connection. I've been spoilt using GUI fronteds for dialing, so I'm at sea configuring wvdial, chat scripts, ppp files, and whatnots... I'm knda hoping there's an easier way within DL. -Richard --- Heiko Zuerker <he...@zu...> wrote: > > Never set up a modem with DL myself, but here are > some good instructions: > ftp://ftp.fl.priv.at/pub/devil-linux/DIALIN-HOWTO.txt > > The instructions are for an older release, but you > should be able to use > them. > > -- > > Regards > Heiko Zuerker > http://www.devil-linux.org __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Well, it's a Cyrix 266MHz box that was collecting dust/LTSP client for Open Days, and the modem is a serial one that I've been using for ages. My current setup works fine, there's just a phone cable going across the kitchen floor into the office. I've got a wireless card in the file/print server, a wrt54g in the hall, and a wifi USB thingy in a laptop. All I'm trying to do is stop tripping over the phone line :-) When all is said and done, I'd rather have knowledge and old redundant hardware, rather than new redundant hardware and no new knowledge. When BT finally fits broadband in a few months (or so they said 6 months ago) the bit of hardware that I could have done with for the past year would be redundant after a couple months of use. Thanks for the lead though. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Small Business - Try our new resources site! http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/resources/ |

There should be a lot of howtos available, just ask google. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

You could use a little standalone box made by Actiontec that includes a 56K dial-up modem and two ethernet ports in a compact device running a tiny version of uClinux inside. This box handles dialing and initial ISP password for you after configuration thru a web browser. Connect two PC's (or a hub/switch) and your ISP appears as a ethernet connection. It can be set to autodial or just use the web browser management screen to connect and/or disconnect the modem. Linux does not need any drivers (beyond the normal ethernet TCP/IP stack) to use this outboard modem/router. For further information, search for "Actiontec Dual Modem". The last retail pricing I saw was around $50USD to $60USD. Hope this helps, John. he...@zu... wrote: > Richard Smith wrote: > >> Looks to be for setting up a dial-in server. You can also do the same thing with Devil-Linux, but you have to manually configure pppd for demand-dialing, etc. I did it a few years ago before I got a cable modem. I don't remember the exact details on how to configure it, but it can be made to work. The standalone box sounds much easier, Devil-Linux is cheaper and more difficult to get working. The choice is yours! :-) - BS > You could use a little standalone box made by Actiontec that includes a > 56K dial-up modem and two ethernet ports in a compact device running a > tiny version of uClinux inside.
