Change the line in cream-colors-default.vim:
highlight User1 gui=bold guifg=#bbbbbb guibg=#f3f3f3
highlight User1 gui=bold guifg=#aaaaaa guibg=#f3f3f3
and try the default scheme again. Does that help? You might also test
changing the Terminal color scheme's User# guibg values from "#505050"
