The current project summary takes knowledge on Linley's Dungeon Crawl for granted, i.e. there's no direct mention that we're talking about a game, let alone any further description.
With Stone Soup becoming more popular, this introductory page just won't do any more.

As a starting improvement I suggest mixing in the game description from the website in there, e.g.

"Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a fun, free rogue-like game of exploration and treasure-hunting in dungeons filled with dangerous and unfriendly monsters in a quest for the mystifyingly fabulous Orb of Zot. It is a variant of Linley's Dungeon Crawl that's openly developed and invites participation from the Crawl community.

The intent of the project is to provide a "reference" platform whose priorities are maximum portability and rapid integration of bug fixes from other Dungeon Crawl variants."

Also, beginning with version 0.4 we should start adding announcements of new versions to the News page, for historical reasons and also as a cheap way of advertisement. (I'll try to keep this in mind when we reach that stage.)

Yes, this is overdue. The same goes for the readme.txt which I will update for 0.4.

Should/can the name of the SourceForge project also be changed to something more appropriate, say, from "Dungeon Crawl Reference" to "Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup"?

Copyedit proposal for clarity and shorter sentences:

"Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a free rogue-like game of exploration and treasure-hunting. In Crawl, you battle through dungeons filled with dangerous and unfriendly monsters in a quest for the mystifyingly fabulous Orb of Zot.

Stone Soup is a variant of Linley's Dungeon Crawl. It is openly developed and invites participation from the Crawl community. IMHO you could even drop the "reference" and "branch" part.

DC/SS is alive, while DC/BWR is not. As long as "Stone Soup" is in the name, nobody is going to get confused. :)

I'd call DC/SS a "continuation of Linley Henzell's Dungeon Crawl". It's pretty clear that we're adding core features rather than just polishing up a "reference platform".

Josh, do you think that finally getting back into the main Crawl branch (something like Crawl 4.2 or 5.0) is feasible? Is it even possible? (These names may all be used by someone.) Of course, I may be a bit too nostalgic here, and we could just sail forever under the Stone Soup flag.

I am updating readme.txt and I will change wording according to your suggestion.

IMHO it is irrelevant, and shouldn't be done just because everyone who's been paying any attention for the last few years knows DC/SS 0.3.4 is a later release than DC/BWR 4.0b26. I can't see how trying to horn in on the naming scheme of that (dead) development branch would help anything... and if by some christmas miracle BWR came back from the twilight zone and released his 4 or 5 (or whatever), people could be genuinely confused. (Not that I consider this likely, but stranger things have happened.)

Similarly, I can't see how jumping from 0.3 --> 5.0 would be anything except confusing.

On a hopefully related note, what are the goals for 1.0? What are the "milestones" that need to happen for 0.4, 0.5, etc.?

Josh, I take your word for it. So DCSS it will be and stay that way.

There is no overall plan of that scope, sorry to disappoint you. (I really wonder if there ever was one.)
Once 0.4 is out, I will send a list with possible targets, and (after everyone added stuff) we'll select the topics for 0.5.
By and large, the current theme is _not_ adding nifty stuff. The main themes are:
    * better interface (this is a constant process and is getting along smoothly)
    * repairing the current game (this _may_ be by adding stuff -- think Lugonu, Beogh)
    * adding little things for flavour is also fine (speech, little gimmicks etc,)

On the latter, here are some culprits: Swamp branch. Hive branch. The pantheon is incomplete (there are playing styles completely uncatered for). Race differentiation is absent in some places; certain species could be improved (Demonspawns, Draconians). Miscellenaneous items need much help, some have been nerfed to death. Shop prices are strange. Acquirements suck in several regards. The combat code needs a Big Hammer (slightly smaller than Brent's hammer, though). Okawaru is an insult to the grace of god (don't even reply here :). Monster descriptions.
And this is just my list.

Bumping priority, not because it's that urgent, but because it should be comparatively easy to do. evktalo's suggestion sounds good enough for now. Possibly change the name to include "Stone Soup", as well, i.e. "Dungeon Crawl Reference (Stone Soup)" or even directly "Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup".

Hmm, I think I'd better ask around on the mailing list for other suggestions.

    New description is fine. Closing.
