I've been pursuing getting a quote for a plush stuffed Chicken of the
VNC icon and it's beginning to look as though this might actually
happen. But, as always, there's an issue - we need to sell enough of
these to cover the manufacturing cost. So we have three choices:
- Sell them at cost
- Sell them for higher than cost and pocket the profit
- Sell them for higher than cost and donate the profit to some charity
My inclination is for the last choice. I'm not comfortable accepting
profit on a community project like this, as it wouldn't be fair to the
other contributors, and trying to find a metric to use to split profit
just ain't feasible. (This is why the Chicken project doesn't accept
sourceforge donations, btw).
So my feeling is that the selling price of these Chicklets should be:
manufacturing cost + reasonable average shipping cost + administrative
overhead + donation amount
"Administrative overhead" covers the labor involved in boxing 'em up
and shipping 'em out, probably about a buck per order. I don't have
any problem with being in charge of shipping these (I live close to a
post office), but if someone else would like to do it, that's obviously
perfectly fine with me, too.
Anyway, assuming that everyone is on the same page, I'd like ideas for
a charity to donate the proceeds to. My inclination is the Electronic
Frontier Foundation, which is very much in the spirit of the
Open-Source movement, but I'm definitely open to other suggestions.
Lemme know your thoughts!
I finally got a quote on Chicken plushies. $500 setup + $3.89 per
plushy. I believe, and am currently verifying, that this is for an
order of 500 plushies. So, $4.89 per plushy is the manufacturing cost.
Administrative Overhead: $1.00
So, we could sell them for $15 and donate $4.11 (realistically,
probably $5) to the EFF for each sale, or sell them for $20 and donate
$9.11 (scary!!!) per.
P.S. I'm not sure if my email with pictures of the prototypes came
through to the list okay. If not, someone please tell me and I'll
