When I connect to a server in my local net (running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
Dapper drake, all updates per date)

Immediately after I connect the MBP screen turns black and the
machine reboots with no warning, also a sharp sound from the
hardware... as if something was short circuited. I reproduced it 3 times,
once even after reboot the Airport was not present (maybe affects HW)

Under rosetta everything works as it should and I do not get the
probelm.

Interestingly I do not have this problem. I'm running COTVNC on my Macbook Pro, and frequently connect to Ubuntu 6.06 LTS systems (using vncserver running on the Ubuntu boxen).
The interesting tidbit is that I rarely, if ever, connect directly. I log into the ubuntu box with ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901, then connect COTVNC to localhost:1. See if that works for you... It would be an interesting data-point.
