When I type various keys like digits and period, I get the shifted
character on the key, but I am not pressing any modifier keys. (Yes,
I triple-checked that caps lock is not pressed.) This does not
happen for the letters.

James, are you using the standard US keyboard layout, or something
    else?

Usually I used a customized KCHR which is basically US but disables the
caps lock key. However, even if I switch to the standard US layout, quit
the client, and reopen the client, then the characters still behave badly.
On the other hand, on other occasions I have seen it work right, even with
my custom layout. I haven't figured out the pattern. The VNC *server*
couldn't be remembering something about the keyboard layout, could it?

No, it's our bug, I'm just making sure I know the situation fully.

Fixed in CVS, I'll keep this open until we release publicly.
