once in a blue moon the nt/fltk console will let root
login on the first try. This is only an error on the
console. ssh is not having the same problem.
Any ideas where I should look?

On your first login type "tty" or "w" to view, what is your default
login device. Then check file "/etc/securetty", there listend all
consoles for root login. Typicaly
