The default is stable, which will only give you a frozen snapshot of packages from a certain point in time. Unstable/testing may give you newer versions. However, for the latest, you may have to build your own. This is more simple than it sounds. You generally should, as a rule, read the installation documents on the website, and then it is normally a case of downloading the source, unzipping it, and then: ./configure make make install Generally, people stick with the distro version if they want something solid that has had time and been tested in the field.
