I've set up a freeciv server on armageddon (the power of VNC!!) and have set
the turn time out to 86400 seconds (1 day).
Unfortunately there are a few quirks to playing it this way.
1) I cannot start the server till there is at least one player connected,
that player has a theoretical advantage as the turn counter can be advanced
till another player joins and the timer kicks in. This is cheating and can
only happen at the start of a game so no big deal.
2) You must log into the server with the same name to retrieve your
civilisation (I'm assuming you won't have the client running 24x7) - your
Civ leaders name is independant of that name though so if you are paranoid
don't use the same username as leader name.
3) In the interests of fair play do not press the ' next turn' button whilst
this is fine if everyone is logged in if two out of three people are logged
in you will advance the turn counter for everyone. This is one turn every 24
hours people! (I could drop it to 12 if we think its going too slow).
I intend to start the server before I leave for work tomorrow morning (this
morning) I will log in and create a civ and take my turn (not pressing the
next turn button though). If you fancy trying this idea out feel free to
connect and create a civ. I will run this 'test' server like this till next
Monday when I'll repost these details and see if the canal lot fancy joining
in - so it doesn't matter if you screw up just yet!
Hope to see some people there.
Oh, nearly forgot, connect to: armageddon.ath.cx on the default port.
