    Installed Clonezilla SE on Ubuntu 12.04 server. Everything appears tobe running correctly. When I pxe boot the client, it brings up the menu but the keyboard only sort of works - at first I can use the arrow keys to select options, but then the arrow keys just stop working and if I press up or down it switches to a dark screen with Ubuntu and four circles under it. This happens on all clients machines (tried a couple of dells, HP laptops etc). The keyboard never seems to work correctly. I was able to just keep hitting enter and made a backup of the hard drive, cannot switch to restore or change the name of the backup even.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Did you upgrade Ubuntu 12.04 to the latest status?
    After that, remember to follow
    http://drbl.org/installation/#upgrade
    to upgrade DRBL, too.
    Or you can try this mode:
    http://drbl.org/installation/#upgrade
    It might work since the client will run on Clonezilla live, and accept the command from Clonezilla SE (DRBL).

    Steven.

      Hi Steve, even I've been facing the keyboard problem in client machines, I just can't clone/deploy images, Everything appears to be running correctly. When I pxe boot the client, it brings up the menu but the keyboard only sort of works - at first I can use the arrow keys to select options, but then the arrow keys just stop working and if I press up or down it switches to a dark screen with Ubuntu and four circles under it. This happens on all clients machines (tried a couple of different desktops). The keyboard never seems to work correctly. I was able to just keep hitting enter and made a backup of the hard drive, cannot switch to restore or change the name of the backup even. Your help would be appreciated most. Please help me to overcome this keyboard problem. Thanks you in advance.

    I'm not sure if your problem is related: if you need azerty layout, think to use Latin-9 from "~Select from full list~" option. (Found this in Known issues page)

    Also having this problem. At first it was fixed by doing a clean install of Ubuntu and DRBL on the server but it's happening again with a laptop.

    Rui, Michael,
    Is your problem on Ubuntu 12.04 with drbl 2.4.19?
    Please let me know so that I can reproduce the problem here.
    Thanks.

      Hi Steven,

      Yeah thats correct. 12.04 server with DRBL 2.4.19.

      It doesn't like keyboard inputs AT ALL. When i press the arrow keys it goes into ubuntu with the 3 dots at the bottom and boots the client into ubuntu.

      The only workaround is by pressing the first letter of the menu to go to the options.

      Such as, if i want to restore a disk, i have to press R about 4 times on the client for it to be selected, then press enter about 4 times to go to the next option etc.

      Very weird.
      Can you help?

      Thanks

    I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 and DRBL 2.4.19, but it only occurs with Clonezilla SE on, so far, a Dell Optiplex 960 and a Dell XPS 14 L421x. Optiplex 740s work. Right now I'm working around the issue by using Clonezilla Live to connect to the Clonezilla server and use the images over the network.

      Had this issue too in 3 new installations.. and temporary I used a nfs share (freenas) to store the images that I had on the Clonezilla Server, booted through Clonezilla live cd and pointed to the nfs share.. worked like a charm.... but still wanted to use the server edition.. now using ubuntu 12.04 and the current drbl package.. having another problem.. it stop on the dhcp screen on the client.. anyone with the same issue?? can someone that installed recently the drbl, send me the steps/versions, commands used to do it? Using a VMWare environment to Ubuntu, with two networks cards... Thanks

    Michel,
    We can not reproduce the problem here. We also use Ubuntu 12.04 as the server when teaching DRBL training courses.
    Is your DRBL client hardware different from that of server?
    If so, what's the difference? Please describe more.
    Thanks.

    Does the server hardware need to be the same as the clients'? That doesn't make sense to me, sort of defeats the purpose.

    Of course not. The info I need is find a way to reproduce the problem here. It could be some issue about the service of udevd or something else. Just can not reproduce the problem here therefore so far I still can not fix this issue.
    I will try to do more tests today here.

    Do i just run drbl-bug-report from terminal on the server?

    Also im using a Optiplex 780 Dell as the server and all the client machines are also dell. Some machines with Broadcom devices dont load the pxe menu, but the same machines with same NIC load the PXE menu.

    I will get a video and youTube it with the problems we (The company) are having and link you to it from here with the problems and run the debug report also.

    Hi Steve,

    Please find linked the videos of the problems:

    Video 1:

    Shows how on a laptop without a SSD it takes AGES to load the software. The linuz.pxe file at the bottom shows that its taking ages to load. That same model laptop (Dell 5410) wasn't loading through PXE before but for some reason it works sometimes. All other times it just hangs on the DHCP part before the PXE boot menu loads up. I have left it there for over an hour before and the menu doesn't pop up. (I read somewere that Clonezilla is incompatible with the Broadcom NIC's?) Other laptops with normal HDD's take ages to load also, but eventually the clonezilla menu comes up and to select options we have to press the first letter corresponding to the menu. Video showing that is below.

    Anyway, video HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K5ipE-uvVs

    Video 2:

    Shows the keyboard errors. Whenever i press arrow keys to select an option, it loads Ubuntu OS as a whole. Not just arrow keys, any various keys that doesn't correspond to the first letter of a menu option loads ubuntu.

    Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5a_xMhP-PU

    Video 3:

    Show how i select option in Clonezilla, by pressing the first letter of the option in the menu.

    Video Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKjzCPVZsYA

    I have also done the drbl-bug-report:

      Exactly the same problem! Steven, what version of ubuntu are you using? Desktop or Server? What is the ubuntu deb address used in the /apt/sources.list ? what is the deb address used to drbl ?? maybe we are using differents sources.. I would like to try the same of your test environment. Also, the ubuntu version is the ones downloaded from the Ubuntu download page... Thanks

    Hi steve,

    Changing it to Clonezilla as main OS gave me two different errors.

    For the 5410, its now stuck at the DHCP screen. http://imgur.com/QD6qCVc

    It gets an IP address but thats as far as it goes.

    As for the SSD 6430 Dell laptops, the arrow keys put me in and out of Ubuntu. Weird to explain so i've uploaded it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1tUAt2-lo4&feature=youtu.be

    I think it's a keyboard error.
    But for the stuck on DHCP screen menu, this baffles me. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't,

    Thanks ,
    Michel

    Michael,
    As for your first error, I think it's tftpd issue. You can try to restart tftpd-hpa service, or reboot your server to make sure the stalled tftpd service has gone. (I have encountered similar issue a few days ago)
    As for the 2nd issue, that's really weird... I agree it's about keyboard error.

    Hi Steven,

    I restarted the tftpd-hpa service and it didn't work. Then rebooted the machine and still didn't work :(

    Still stuck on the DHCP screen.

    And for the keyboard error, what steps can i do to try and fix the keyboard error? As in is there a file i can edit and try different options to see what i can do to fix it?

    Thanks

    Weird... Did you find any clue in server's system logs (/var/log/messages, /var/log/daemon.log or /var/log/syslog) about tftpd?
    As for the keyboard issue, not sure if it's keymap issue. However, when running "drblpush -i", the keymap settings on the server should be copied to clients...
    Normally on server we run
    dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
    setupcon
    to configure that. The configure file should be in /etc/default/keyboard. Therefore if it's about keymap, you can edit /tftpboot/nodes/$IP/etc/default/keyboard on the server. It will be loaded on client.

    Steven.

    What should i be looking for in the log?

      Hi Michel, which option did you choose on dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration ?
      after that, did you executed drblpush -i again?? can you confirm your steps?
      tried to run setupcon and got this message:
      "We are not on the console, the console is left unconfigured"

      Stupid question... I can select the options by typing TAB (to go through the options) and use SPACE to select and go to the another option.. is this the right way now??? Or still using the arrow keys and ENTER??

      this is the content of the /tftpboot/nodes/$IP/etc/default/keyboard file:

      XKBMODEL="pc105"
      XKBLAYOUT="br"
      XKBVARIANT=""

    Okay,

    I monitored the syslog file (As there wasnt a Daemon.log) and attached the 5410 laptop over.

    Tail -f the file and as i connected the laptop, the error was:

    "TFTP: Client does not accept options."

    Any idea?

  • Steven Shiau
    Steven Shiau

    "TFTP: Client does not accept options." -> This is fine. Nothing to do with the issue you have now.
    You can try to increase the verbosity in the log file by editing /etc/default/tftpd-hpa on the server, change
    TFTP_OPTIONS="--secure"
    as
    TFTP_OPTIONS="--secure -v -v -v"
    then restart the tftpd-hpa service. Then monitor the log files again.
    BTW, do you have 2nd DHCP service in the same LAN? If so, that would cause similar issue. Also make sure your firewall or tcpwrapper settings do not block the tftpd service.

    Steven.

    I would suggest you first uninstall drbl by running "drblsrv -u" to clean all the files. Then run "drblsrv -i" and "drblpush -i" again.

    after that, did you executed drblpush -i again?? can you confirm your steps?
    tried to run setupcon and got this message:
    "We are not on the console, the console is left unconfigured"

    Stupid question... I can select the options by typing TAB (to go through the options) and use SPACE to select and go to the another option.. is this the right way now??? Or still using the arrow keys and ENTER??
    this is the content of the /tftpboot/nodes/$IP/etc/default/keyboard file:

    XKBMODEL="pc105"
    XKBLAYOUT="br"
    XKBVARIANT=""
    XKBOPTIONS=""

    Thank you!

      Hi Steve,

      Did a 13.04 install today and the keyboard mapping worked without having to re do the configuration.

      @13.04 also fixed the issue with the tftpd error when trying to load certain laptops!.

      So all has been fixed now.

      @Ricardo.

      @12.04 the keyboard config fixed it for me. If you want more help, give me your email address i'll tell you what steps i did and we can work this out together if you want :).

      As a recommendation, re run drblpush -i and on DRBL mode select option 1 (SSI). See how that goes.

      Thanks Steven for your amazing help! You are a star!!

      Michel
