Whatever became of this idea?
I expect it would be a big win for applications that want to do a
lot of IO without blocking.

READ-BYTE-SEQUENCE accepts :NO-HANG argument since 2003-01-24.
WRITE-BYTE-SEQUENCE would need much work - you are welcome to do it.
READ/WRITE-CHAR-SEQUENCE would be very hairy (what if the input blocked
in the middle of a character?), but you are welcome to do that too.
