Again I've gotten a small demo to work (clisp, apache, linux).
My impression is that apache kills the program after it hasn't been
used for a while. I don't know how to control that.

I tried spawning a command line process as suggested but
on my system it takes 30X longer to connect than to reuse
an existing db connection. But I guess this difference
wouldn't be noticed on lightly used applications.
