It turns out that the reason regex couldn't configure was that the
config.cache entry for gcc -E had too many quotes in it. I deleted that
entry and was able to complete my build. I saved away a copy of the
post-syscalls-pre-regex config.cache file to diff for later, and boy
did a lot of things show up different! (too many to list here). It
looks like the stuff coming out of the syscalls configuration process
has more quotes around it than the stuff from the regex configuration.
I can do more extensive configuration testing tomorrow, but I'm
guessing this is something pretty simple (just as I'm hoping the
Control-M problem was something simple. ;-).
