Feature Request: Change background color for start menu subfolders
I had been using VistaStartMenu (freeware) but the latest versions (which
are called StartMenuX) have eliminated the options I like best. I'm now
Here's my request: When the mouse hovers over a folder in the start menu (or
clicks on the folder) then the subfolder opens. However, it's sometimes
difficult to see the contents as it gets lost with the background of the
rest of the start menu.
Could there be an option to alternate background color -- say white, light-
white, etc. -- this would make it easy to see the contents of the sub-
Thanks for your consideration.
Ah I see what you mean. Sometimes I have had this problem too but it's not too
severe. You can use skins to change this. For example, if you have a dual
column layout, you can use the Windows 7/Vista Aero skins whose right column
is black. Then if you customize the menu to keep expanding items on the left
with the submenus in white set from skin options, there will be a contrast.
Or you can completely create you own skin which allows specifying a custom
submenu background color using Resource Hacker (open an existing skin in it
and save it with a different name). Read the skin tutorial: http://classicshe
OK, I gave it a try. I added:
and then every submenu -- including that which is opened by "Programs" has
I then removed that and added is so:
and got the same result.
Maybe I'm missing something -- is it possible to alternate submenu background
See the attached image and note how the "games" submenu overlays the 3rd and
4th columns of the "Programs" menu in such a way that it is almost
indistinguishable. In addition, note that >all< the backgrounds (except for
the main manu) are the same color: d2d2d2.
Okay I misunderstood. I thought you were asking for just an alternate submenu
color. You want submenus nested inside one another to show in an alternate
color background, one white, then another grey. No that is not currently
possible but that's a nice idea. Ivo can decide that whether he wants to add
such a feature and let you know. I face that problem too sometimes.
Yeah, there is no way to alternate sub-menu styles. It will require a whole
new set of skin properties.
If you want to distinguish the sub-menus better, you may make the border more
visible. Look at skins like Luna that use a bitmap for the sub-menus.
