There are no plans to develop a Thunderbird/Mozilla Mail
extension, but on-access scanning (which is being worked on)
will mean that it is not required

I install Thunderbird on all my clients machines instead of
Outlook. After telling them how much safer it is to stay
away from Lookout/Lookout express I then discover that
Clamwin only integrates with Outlook?
I'd like to see ClamWin with a general purpose
POP3/IMAP/SMTP intercept and scan feature. Then all my
clients will be using it and I'll insist that they donate too.

I do not agree on on-access scanning matching the need for
requested feature -- although, it is a very good feature as
an option. The risk of viruses entering a system comes
primarily from email, downloads (and removable media in some
cases). Therefore, filtering these likely paths of
migration would be more efficient than scanning the same old
files over and over again. This requested feature would
also be able to PREVENT the CONTAMINATION instead of merely
CLEANING the system after CONTAMINATION.
I would certainly vote for IMAP/POP/SMTP filtering suggested
by franki_hauptle.

there will be thunderbird mail scan and firefox downloads
scan plugins. In due course after on acces scanning is done
or an experienced XUL developer volunteers to help first

I would also like this feature. I would be willing to add
$30 to a PayPal fund to encourage developers to work on it! :)

that would definitely be a nice feature...

I would also love this feature! Although I am happy that it
works with Outlook 2003, which I was kind of surprised with
when I tried it!

This would be an excellent feature. Most of the people
interested in open source software are using Mozilla browser
and email clients, anyway. :)

integration of thunderbird and clamwin is no.1 priority for
opening migration path to opensource products on windows! ;)
situation now looks like you need either closed source mail
client either closed source antivirus to get it working for
end users...

But it must also support IMAP protocol, not only POP3!
