Hello friends! I have used Cinepaint for more than ten years, and it is still the best open source/free software image editor. Yes, GIMP still lacks serious color management, the internal engines are programmed to presuppose sRGB in all files. However, since I had to upgrade from OpenSuSE 13.2 to Leap 42.3 because of compatibility issues with new RAW image converters I have encountered two big problems. I use CinePaint 1.4.0. The exact version is cinepaint-1.4.1-1.19.x86_64. I have also tried cinepaint-1.4.1-2.40.x86_64, but that one would not open a single file and instead crashed. Problem 1: Failure to open the program from the graphical menu in the systray: http://www.coldsiberia.net/phototest/Screenshot_20180611_181031_cinepaint_error_messages.jpg Problem 2: This is very serious: http://www.coldsiberia.net/phototest/Screenshot_20180611_145508_cinepaint_error_messages.jpg - The first problem is an inconvenience. It is possible to start the program from the console, but it is not optimal in particular if we want more people to use CinePaint. - The second problem is serious, it hampers the program function and these error messages pop up constantly. No matter what I do with Cinepaint under OpenSuSE Leap 42.3, a very large number of similar error messages litter the screen. Can you give me - and others with the same problems - help to remedy them effectively? -- Noise reduction is just another word for image destruction. Per Inge Oestmoen, Norway |

Hi, after installing CinePaint from a .deb file (I'm using Ubuntu 16.04),CinePaint doesn't recognize the sRGB profile (sRGB_v4_ICC_preference.icc) in my ICC Profiles folder. (All the other profiles, among them Adobe RGB, are being recognized.) Does anybody can give me a clue where the problem might be? I'm new to color management. And: How does the Splines tool & Spline Edit work? TIA, Claus P.S.: I get a lot of error messages in the shell when I start & run CinePaint, such as '(cinepaint:3298): Gdk-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_draw_text: assertion 'font != NULL' failed' Can I ignore those errors? |

Thanks again Frank, The problem disappeared after a reboot :-) No further issues. Very grateful for your help Now I have to learn how to use the program... BTW I thought cinepaint supported cmyk editing? Best regards Graeme |

The /home/xx/.cinepaint directory does not exist from previous versions and cinepaint can't seen to create a new one. You may want to delete (or temporarily rename) any partial /home/xx/.cinepaint and the start cinepaint again, but this time choose "Ignore" at the license prompt. Cinepaint will then start normally. Then go to "File --> Preferences" and manually fill in all the parameters and finally save the preferences. Hopefully this will create a new and workable /home/xx/.cinepaint. Otherwise, I could send a zipped .cinepaint directory containing all the files that you could just tweak though "File --> Preferences" to match your system. Frank Peters |

Thanks for that, Frank. auto naming sounds like an awesome thing I have use the frame manager and one of the things I wanted is to have something like the gimp but instead of opening the frames like layers and go all the way to save each individual layer as a file, to have the opposite which is to be able to work on onion skin over multiple layers and save each layer as individual file and all of them numerically auto named. E. G. Option->Export layers as numbered images->chooses extension/quality/compression That would do it. > Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2012 13:44:14 -0800 > From: ro...@ci... > To: cin...@li... > Subject: Re: [CinePaint] CinePaint and Hand-drawn Animation > > > Open blender->go to video sequencer(top left, change from default to > > video editing)->add image(choose the drive or folder from the > > left)->select multiple images by choosing a single image holding the alt > > key and go to the final image and click on it)->click on add image on > > the top right. Is true that the learning curve has been long and painful for me what I have learned that can help everyone is as simple as Open blender->go to video sequencer(top left, change from default to video editing)->add image(choose the drive or folder from the left)->select multiple images by choosing a single image holding the alt key and go to the final image and click on it)->click on add image on the top right To do some tweening on the raster image on the video sequencer, choose the strip with all the images->click on add->effect strip->transform Click on view->properties to access the transform properties You will have position and scale, rotation set a position, a size and/or a rotation right click after you choose your numbers and choose insert keyframe Then go to the next frame you want to change and do likewise Press the play button and see how the image change its properties. As simple as that Any questions? I am happy to answer them Cheers > Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2012 22:11:42 -0800 > From: ro...@ci... > To: cin...@li... > Subject: Re: [CinePaint] CinePaint and Hand-drawn Animation > > > True that cinepaint could benefit from a timeline. I imagine Blender would only be able to do vector-based animation with automatic tweening (like Flash or ToonBoom), rather than raster-based handdrawn animation. -- Brett W. Hello all True that cinepaint could benefit from a timeline. However, saving exr and opening them in blender can also do it. You can do tweening using the keyframing feature and it can display both the timeline and the preview. I have been working with both cinepaint and blender for 6 years on a project to test how far can I go with these tools. I have been praised by the visuals http://www.youtube.com/constantingazer. > Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2012 17:45:27 -0800 > From: ro...@ci... > To: cin...@li... > Subject: Re: [CinePaint] CinePaint and Hand-drawn Animation > > > Hand-drawn animation support... there is very little on Linux that > > supports traditional animation, with the exception of TVPaint, which > > is expensive proprietary software. Hand-drawn animation support... there is very little on Linux that supports traditional animation, with the exception of TVPaint, which is expensive proprietary software. It would be great to have open source software with a solid brush and painting engine that also supports hand-drawn animation. CinePaint already has the compositing and layers support, and coupled with the flipbook, it would just need something like onionskinning to take it to the next level as a solid animation app. On Sun, Nov 25, 2012 at 2:28 PM, Robin Rowe <ro...@ci...> wrote: > CinePaint is about to take a leap forward. CinePaint is about to take a leap forward. There will be a new release of CinePaint on Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and Windows in January. At the same time I'm working on making the CinePaint release ready there will be a Kickstarter campaign to provide the means to keep fresh CinePaint releases coming. That starts in two weeks. Releasing CinePaint on Windows has been the #1 request I've received. If you have other CinePaint features requests or suggestions for the CinePaint Kickstarter campaign, let me know here or email me privately at ro...@ci.... Thanks everyone for your CinePaint support. Hi Frank, Many thanks for that info. After a bit of searching found the plug-ins folder in /usr/bin/lib/cinepaint/1.3.0/ and now can open jpegs etc. In the process also found the Gradients and Brushes folder in /usr/bin/share/cinepaint/1.3.0 The Palettes and Patterns when I added the path for these just crashed Cinepaint. Now experimenting with ICC profiles. Both are missing from your cinepaintrc file, as are many other things. If you can start cinepaint successfully from an X console, then you can manually modify the paths from the menu entry: File -> Preferences -> Folders - Plug-in Folder. After changing the paths, select "Save." This should create a new cinepaintrc. Frank Peters |

Hello, I gave up on CinePaint sources from cinepaint.org/sourceforge.net since these seem to be unmaintained for some time - my experience was exactly like described here: http://old.nabble.com/Cinepaint-1.3-does-not-find-its-plugins-tc33706014.html What I did is that I compiled the CinePaint with patches provided by Kai-Uwe Behrmann (see oyranos web site). If you do not want to go that way, you may want to use PhotoPrint instead - it uses gutenprint, supports colour management and also 16bit colour depth. If you wanted to use CinePaint also for editing, you may want to look at e.g. Krita. P.S. I still use CinePaint occasionally and am happy with it. regards, Milan jo...@we... writes: > « HTML content follows » > Hi Bob, > many thanks for the quick response, > As far as I am aware I did not use any prefix. Hi Bob, many thanks for the quick response, As far as I am aware I did not use any prefix. I just downloaded and moved into /opt then followed instructions on 'Install' document for Debian. I did not add any prefix. The path '/usr/bin/bin/cinepaint' implies that the software was configured with the wrong prefix. Did you somehow configure with --prefix=/usr/bin ?
