Dr. Kirkby: Has anyone ever changed the GUI file so that the new TWIC address is in it? That way the program would not give the error when trying to automatically download games to it from TWIC. It's been awhile since Mark Crowthers moved his site and it's been a hassle to manually download games from the TWIC site. Used to be simple since the program would remember where you left off from the last download you made. I tried looking in the GUI file but not having a clue when the TWIC address would be makes it kind of hard to find it. Anyways if the updated GUI file does exist where can I get a copy of it? Your help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance. See ya. |

Hi: Has anyone modified the address of TWIC in the GUI file so that the downloads work automatically again? Thanks. Hugh V. Conyac |

Hi, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "save" here. But if you go Options -> Game Information -> Show FEN then you will see an extra line of information at the bottom of the game information window. Something like: rnbqkbnr/pppp1ppp/4p3/8/4P3/8/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 2 That is the FEN, which describes the position. It happens to be after 1.e4 e6. That said, I can't find a way of loading that back in. I'm sure there is a way. What you can also do is get a game and strip the moves before the current position and/or after the current position. If you stip all moves before and all moves after, then you have just a position, with no moves. Go to the Edit menu, select "Strip" then strip them from both the beggining and the end. At that point you have a game with just a position but no moves. Then save that as a new game in a database. If you load that game, you will just see that position, rather than the usual start position. Hello list maintainer, As a rule I'm not one to criticize, but you know that this list appears to be as dead as can be. The reason I'm writing this message is because I posted a question and the only reply it got was from a troll. I have also noted that the list appears to have received only two or three messages annually for the last few years. ChessDB really is great, but there's clearly neither support for the software nor the website any more; don't you think it would be merciful to just kill the list and remove the illusion of an active user community? Hello, Could you please tell me: is it possible for the file chooser to open in the last directory from which I imported a PGN game? Thank you for any help. Gerard |

But anyway, your initiative seems very interesting. What I think most people do regarding the issue is just download the games from TWIC every week. But even for Mark Crowther is not possible to reach all events. That is why in the Games section of NowInChess.com I keep track of many tournaments not covered by TWIC and offer them as a monthly download. You can aso use them for your database, of course. -- Saludos. Gerardo. http://www.NowInChess.com |

Hi David! A few questions! a) Any plan to update ChessDB in the near future? b) All the download options don't work anymore, is there a workaround/solution/fix? c) I have started a "project" to build a HUGE master database using ChessDB (chessgamesrepository.wordpress.com) so that most likely means that a lot of new people will start using ChessDB. Are there any plans to update the ratings, names, etc files ? ----------------- Benoit St-Jean Yahoo! Messenger: bstjean A standpoint is an intellectual horizon of radius zero. (Albert Einstein) > |

Can you try this: 1) Copy the file from here: http://boxen.math.washington.edu/home/kirkby/chessdb.gui 2) Make a backup of the file C:\program files\chessdb\bin\chessdb.gui 3) Overwrite the old chessdb.gui with the new one. Unfortuanately, I managed to lose the source code for ChessDB, and that on the sourceforge server is not that up to date. But that file has a new link to a permanent place of residence for the database. Unfortunately, there seems to be another issue now, since the location of the twic files has moved. But hopefully I'll manage to resolve that too. You will find some other interesting things there too in that update - you can now look at two scores for different moves in an opening and determine if there is a statistically significant difference between them. I had the exact same problem (I'm on XP too) when trying to save those files from a web browser (tried Opera, Firefox & Chrome). I finally had to use Free Download Manager to be able to download those 57 parts (besides, with parallel downloads and multi-parts THIS is WAY faster, took me less than 10 minutes). If you have DropBox or something similar where I could transfer you the 3.5 million database, I'd be pleased to help. Besides, pretty soon you won't need to download it... Hello everyone, I'm trying to figure out how I should/could proceed (with filters or any other method) to delete games that DO NOT HAVE have any of the following properties 1)One of the players is rated 2200 and over OR 2) One of the players is titled (MF, M, GM, etc) In other words, I'm trying to delete games in which none of the 2 players is rated 2200+ or is titled. So a game between a 1850 player and a Master (or any title) should be kept. A game between a 1850 and a 2205 should be kept. A game between 2 players that are both NON-TITLED and a re both UNDER 2200 should be deleted. Any idea? ----------------- Benoit St-Jean Yahoo! Hello everyone, I have started a blog (chessgamesrepository.wordpress.com) for one simple reason : frustration. How many of you quietly download and collect tons of PGN games that you patiently import into your database? We all do the same and waste tons of time, effort and bandwith while we could all cooperate and make things so much easier! I came to the conclusion that if we all share the effort, everything would be so simple! That’s why I’ll start collecting PGN files and import them into one master database that we will all share. FOR FREE obviously! I’m planning on releasing a new database once a month. I will use ChessDB (available for Unix and Windows) to manage the master database. I’m not decided on what to include/exclude in this database but I’m thinking on keeping only games where one of the player has over 2200 ELO rating. I guess we don’t want crap in this database. Anyhow, suggestions are welcome and discussion takes place in the new Yahoo group I just created (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/chessgamesrepository)! I’m open to discussion regarding what to keep, what to exclude, what to normalize, etc. If you have games in ChessAssistant format, ChessBase, SCID, Scid vs PC, ChessX, ChessMaster, etc., you’re more than welcome to help and convert them into PGN format. If you own one of these chess databases, I will probably need your help to convert some of those files into PGN. The more we are, the better! Ten million games in 6 months is my goal. One contributor per country is also another goal I have! Every country has a chess federation/association/league, everyone of you knows a chess club we don’t know about, everyone of you has its site no one knows about, everyone of you has games others don’t have, etc. Together, we’re better, stronger, smarter! Together, as a community of chess players, we can help each other towards a common goal : make a damn good and huge database of chess games! You can answer me privately at: chessgamesrepository [@] yahoo [dot] com Thanks! ----------------- Benoit St-Jean Yahoo! Messenger: bstjean A standpoint is an intellectual horizon of radius zero. Hello everyone, I have downloaded the 57 parts of the 3.5 millions HUGE database available from chessdb.sourceforge.net and I'm puzzled as to what to do now to consolidate all those files into on big database. Those files are not PGN but they seem to be chessdb files but I get some error when trying to open them. What do I have to do to consolidate those 57 files into one database? Thanks! ----------------- Benoit St-Jean Yahoo! Messenger: bstjean A standpoint is an intellectual horizon of radius zero. (Albert Einstein) |

Does anyone know why selected start up options are not stored and implemented for subsequent start-ups? "Auto-save Options on exit" is ticked, but does not work, nor does manual "Save Options". I have managed to edit the chessDB.gui file so that the "switcher" and "PGN" windows are opened at start-up, but cannot find the comment editor window in the code. I find ChessDB much easier to use than Area 3.0 for editing games, variation insertion - I just cannot fathom Arena for these functions. Mike |
